This reproduction of a watercolor original, by artist Annie Moran, depicts a Zulu, Mardi Gras parade participant. He stands with cocky self assurance, beer in hand, whistle in mouth, before a pattern of lions resting on live oak branches.

Just as the lion is king of the jungle, the black man is king of culture in New Orleans, even as he is oppressed and struggles for an equal place in the larger socio-economic society. One place that he can reign, is in self-expression.
